How to analyze/decode CPT procedure codes in STATA

Hello All,

We are all aware that the ICD diagnosis and procedure codes have been used to answer specific questions using claims databases. I wanted to ask if there is a way to decode and analyze CPT procedure codes in an administrative database using STATA. Despite extensive search online, I could not find a single reference. If not STATA, is there any software that has the capability to decode/analyze CPT procedure codes?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Abhishek, I believe (recalling this off the top of my head…) that these codes are actually owned by the AMA. Back around 2014, I purchased the data files (price was modest as I recall) and simply read the data with R, created a look-up table, etc. If you’re having trouble finding off-the-shelf software for this, perhaps the reason is the need to licence the underlying CPT data?

David is correct. Generally linking CPT metadata requires a license from the AMA.
